Jazz history

Wallis Willis

OHS's Women of Oklahoma survey identifies Minerva and her father Wallace as Choctaw freedmen associated with spirituals at Spencer Academy and documents Reverend Alexander Reid's transmission of the songs to the Fisk Jubilee Singers. TravelOK and Choctaw Nation sources corroborate the Oklahoma/Choctaw setting and song tradition. These sources support the historical person and Oklahoma connection but do not prove sole authorship of every song.

Oklahoma connection

High: OHS, TravelOK, and Choctaw Nation sources place Willis and Minerva at Spencer Academy and in the Choctaw Nation/Indian Territory; exact authorship and life dates remain uncertain.

Hall of Fame account

The Hall page identifies Wallis/Wallace Willis as a Choctaw freedman in Indian Territory credited with singing or composing spirituals later associated with the Fisk Jubilee Singers, while explicitly retaining uncertainty about dates and authorship.
