In this history

Research status: first-pass county report, through December 31, 1999

Confidence labels: high means directly documented; medium means a credible lead needing page-level confirmation; low means contextual or indirect evidence.

1. Scope and method

This report searches Haskell County for wind, brass, percussion, concert, community, marching, military, veterans, municipal, school, college, and related instrumental ensembles. Youth and school bands are included because they are part of the long-term pathway into adult amateur music. The cutoff is December 31, 1999. (high)

2. Communities searched

The search covered Stigler, Kinta, Keota, McCurtain, Whitefield, Enterprise, Hoyt, Tamaha, and surrounding Haskell County communities and school districts. (medium)

3. Newspaper and archival base

The Gateway to Oklahoma History provides Haskell County newspapers, including the Haskell County News from Chant-McCurtain. FamilySearch provides Oklahoma school records, and the county school-record index identifies yearbooks for Kinta, McCurtain, and Stigler. (high)

4. Earliest located qualifying evidence

No pre-1940 qualifying band record was directly verified in the first pass. The earliest strong local evidence located is the 1985 Stigler High School yearbook, which documents a functioning high-school band program with a director, drum major, beginning band, concerts, and a named roster. (high)

5. Stigler High School band, 1985

The 1985 Stigler yearbook states that Fred Queen directed the band. It identifies Jennifer Pruner as drum major and provides a named band-member listing that includes Tina Dillon, Amy Martin, Katie O’Brien, Angie Welch, Jamie Cossey, Steven Fioretti, Andrea Mouser, Bob Burch, Tony Porter, Paul Sanger, K. Sturgess, Mel Matthews, David Shrum, Stacy Burch, Mike Bender, John Garland, Kelley Coni Livesay, Shelly Hall, Kelli Holt, Ladonna Clyma, Kim Parker, Stephanie Martin, Mike Helton, Jamie Pruner, Dean Powell, Greg Janeway, and Mike Buntin. (high)

The yearbook also documents senior band members John Garland, Mike Bender, Jennifer Pruner, Tina Dillon, and Andrea Mouser. (high)

6. Stigler performances and ensemble structure

The 1985 yearbook documents a high-school band playing at an American Pop Concert, a beginning band performing at a spring concert, band participation in a Christmas Concert, and a band performance at a homecoming ceremony. (high)

This establishes multiple ensemble levels and public performance settings, although the yearbook does not provide complete programs, dates, or instrumentation. (high)

7. Stigler student musicians and honors

Andrea Mouser’s senior biography records 1984 Oklahoma State University Honor Band participation, 1984 and 1985 Oklahoma All-Star Band participation, a McDonald All-American Band nomination, and membership in band and stage band. Tina Dillon is identified as an All-District Band alternate. (high)

These records show the school band serving as a pathway to broader honor-band and stage-band participation. (high)

8. Stigler school-record holdings

Stigler High School yearbooks are indexed for 1915, 1920, 1923, 1946, 1952, 1956, 1962, 1966, 1970-1979, 1980-1982, 1985-1989, and 1996. The 1985 volume is openly available through the Internet Archive and is the strongest directly inspected source in this report. (high)

The early indexed Stigler volumes from 1915, 1920, and 1923 are important follow-up targets for identifying an earlier band. (high)

9. Kinta school records

Kinta High School yearbooks are indexed for 1939, 1940, 1942, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1953, 1956, 1962, 1965, 1967, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1977, and 1979, with additional volumes through 1999. No page-level Kinta band record was recovered in this pass. (high)

10. McCurtain, Keota, and other schools

McCurtain High School yearbooks are indexed for 1946 and 1991-1999. Keota has a 2004 yearbook listing, outside the historical cutoff. No qualifying pre-2000 band page was directly verified for these schools. (high)

No separate band record was recovered for Whitefield, Enterprise, Hoyt, Tamaha, or rural Haskell County schools in this first pass. (medium)

11. Civic, military, and community bands

No separately named Haskell County municipal, civic, veterans, military, or adult community band was directly verified before 2000. The Stigler evidence is a school-based instrumental program. (high)

The 1985 record should nevertheless be treated as a likely source of adult musicians who may later have played in community ensembles. (medium)

12. Performances and venues

The 1985 Stigler yearbook documents homecoming, spring, Christmas, and American Pop Concert settings. It does not name all venues or provide complete dates. (high)

13. Competitions and ratings

The yearbook documents honor-band and all-star-band recognition for Andrea Mouser and an All-District Band alternate designation for Tina Dillon. No concert-band contest rating or marching contest result was directly verified. (high)

14. Directors, instructors, and organizers

Fred Queen is directly identified as Stigler’s band director in 1985. No earlier director or full tenure was established. (high)

15. Instrumentation and ensemble structure

The 1985 yearbook documents high-school band, beginning band, and stage band. It does not provide an instrument-by-instrument roster. The photographed captions and roster establish band participation but not exact instrumentation. (high)

16. Newspaper findings

The Haskell County News is a verified county newspaper source, including a February 16, 1912, issue from Chant-McCurtain. Additional issues should be searched for school concerts, parades, fairs, patriotic events, and local musicians. (high)

17. Photographs and visual records

The 1985 Stigler yearbook OCR preserves captions describing the band and performance scenes. The complete yearbook is available through the Internet Archive, allowing future page-image inspection. (high)

No separate historical Haskell County band photograph was located outside the yearbook in this pass. (high)

18. Family and musician connections

The 1985 Stigler roster and biographies provide the first substantial Haskell County musician-name set for family-history work. The names should be cross-referenced with later newspapers, alumni records, obituaries, and adult community-band records. (high)

19. Relationship to the Oklahoma Musicians thesis

Haskell County provides direct evidence of a small-community school instrumental program functioning across multiple levels and public settings. The Stigler program connected beginning band, high-school band, stage band, honor band, all-star band, and public concerts. (high)

20. Scope boundaries and negative searches

Modern Stigler band pages were retained only as continuity leads and were not used to establish pre-2000 history. The 1985 Stigler yearbook was accepted as historical evidence because it is dated, tied to Stigler, Oklahoma, and openly accessible through the Internet Archive. (high)

The absence of earlier named bands in this first pass reflects incomplete digitization and limited page-level access, not proof that none existed. (high)

21. Recommended follow-up

  1. Inspect the Stigler yearbooks from 1915, 1920, 1923, 1946, 1952, 1956, 1962, and 1966 for earlier bands and directors. (high)
  2. Search the 1985 Stigler yearbook page images around the OCR band pages for readable photographs, captions, and additional names. (high)
  3. Obtain and inspect Kinta yearbooks from 1939-1999, prioritizing 1939-1956 and the 1960s-1970s. (high)
  4. Obtain McCurtain yearbooks from 1946 and 1991-1999. (high)
  5. Search Haskell County newspapers for band, concert, parade, fair, commencement, cornet, drum, bugle, music teacher, and honor-band references. (high)
  6. Trace Fred Queen’s full career and determine whether he directed before or after 1985. (medium)
  7. Search the Stigler 1985 roster for adult amateur musicians and family connections. (high)
  8. Contact Stigler, Kinta, and McCurtain schools and local libraries for programs, photographs, and band memorabilia. (medium)

Source and confidence summary

High-confidence verified evidence: the 1985 Stigler High School yearbook, including Fred Queen, Jennifer Pruner, the named roster, beginning band, stage band, homecoming, spring, Christmas, and American Pop Concert references; the school-record index; the Internet Archive item record; and Haskell County newspaper holdings. (high)

Medium-confidence interpretation: the Stigler program likely had continuity before and after 1985 because it included multiple ensemble levels and formal public performances, but additional yearbooks are needed to establish the chronology. (medium)
