In this history
1. Scope and method
This first-pass report covers organized instrumental bands and related school, civic, marching, concert, brass, wind, percussion, military, parade, and contest evidence in Garvin County through December 31, 1999. School ensembles are included as continuity evidence for the county's lifelong amateur musician tradition. Unrelated popular music is not counted as qualifying band evidence.
2. Communities searched
The search centered on Pauls Valley and included Wynnewood, Lindsay, Davis, Elmore City, Maysville, Stratford, Pernell, and rural school communities. The strongest directly inspectable evidence is from Pauls Valley. Confidence: medium.
3. Newspaper and archival base
The Gateway preserves the Pauls Valley Democrat, the Wynnewood New Era and Wynnewood Gazette, Lindsay News, and other Garvin County newspapers. It also preserves the 1957 county history From Bluestem to Golden Trend. Internet Archive provides a downloadable 1970 Pauls Valley High School yearbook. Confidence: high.

4. Earliest located qualifying evidence
The earliest directly verified qualifying band record located in this pass is not yet established. The accessible county newspaper and local-history holdings reach the early twentieth century, while the first fully inspectable band narrative recovered is the 1970 Pauls Valley High yearbook. This is a research limitation, not evidence that Garvin County lacked earlier bands. Confidence: high for the limitation; low for any claim of historical absence.
5. Pauls Valley High School, 1969-1970
The 1970 yearbook documents a substantial Pauls Valley High School band under Jim Winkle. It describes rigorous daily practice beginning at 7 a.m., annual Christmas and spring concerts, marching performances, contest travel, and excellent and superior ratings throughout the year. Confidence: high.
6. Pauls Valley contests and ratings
The band marched in the Oklahoma State Fair Parade in Oklahoma City and then performed at the Edmond Homecoming Parade, where it received a superior rating. It received a second superior at Arbuckle Band Day in Davis. The yearbook records three excellent ratings from the Wewoka Regional Marching Contest and the Ada District Meet, where students demonstrated sight-reading and concert proficiency. Confidence: high.
7. Pauls Valley concerts and public activity
Under Winkle, the band presented annual Christmas and spring concerts and performed popular selections within those school concert programs. The band also appeared before public audiences in parades and contests, showing that it functioned as both a school organization and a visible community institution. Confidence: high.
8. Pauls Valley personnel and roster
The yearbook prints a band photograph with named members, including C. Lester, P. McCullough, R. Poyner, J. Allen, V. Swinney, L. A. Coffman, D. Williams, B. Moody, L. Lobaugh, D. Harper, M. Griffin, P. Hannah, J. Pittman, L. McCurley, C. Rogers, C. Strickland, M. Dickson, S. Weeks, B. Farabough, P. Williamson, D. Zellner, C. Brumley, and others. The roster should be checked against the page image before expansion or public identification. Confidence: high for the roster's existence; medium for OCR-derived initials.
9. Drum majors, officers, and leadership
The 1970 yearbook identifies Debbie Williams as drum majorette and names a Band Council that included Mike Ferguson, Pat Sohrwide, Paula McCullough, Bruce Morris, Sara Crews, Billie Moody, Jan Richardson, Vicky Swinney, and Rebecca Farabough. Jim Winkle is identified as director. Confidence: high.
10. Instrumental and ensemble structure
The yearbook documents a marching band, concert activity, sight-reading and concert competition, a drum-majorette role, and an organized Band Council. It does not provide a complete instrument roster in the accessible OCR. Confidence: high for the ensemble structure; medium for instrumentation details.
11. Other Garvin County school communities
No directly verified pre-2000 band record was recovered in this pass for Wynnewood, Lindsay, Davis, Elmore City, Maysville, Stratford, or Pernell. The Gateway's newspaper records and the county-history volume provide important leads for locating school concerts, parades, band directors, and local ensembles. Confidence: low to medium.
12. Davis and Arbuckle Band Day
Davis is directly connected to the Pauls Valley band's 1970 contest chronology through Arbuckle Band Day, where Pauls Valley received a superior rating. The yearbook does not establish whether Davis hosted its own qualifying band in the same year. Confidence: high for the event and Pauls Valley result; low for Davis's own band history.
13. Performances and venues
Verified settings include the Oklahoma City State Fair Parade, Edmond Homecoming Parade, Arbuckle Band Day in Davis, Wewoka Regional Marching Contest, Ada District Meet, Pauls Valley school concert settings, and public parade routes. Confidence: high.
14. Competitions and ratings
The Pauls Valley record includes two superior results and at least three excellent results, covering marching, concert, and sight-reading contexts. Exact adjudication sheets and the complete contest chronology were not recovered. Confidence: high for the yearbook's summary.
15. Civic and community bands
No separately named adult municipal, civic, veterans, or military band was verified. Pauls Valley's school band performed in public events, but the accessible record does not establish a separate adult community ensemble. Confidence: medium.
16. Newspaper findings
Garvin County has a useful newspaper base for earlier research. The Pauls Valley Democrat was founded in 1898 as a continuation of the Pauls Valley Sentinel, and the Gateway provides issues from Pauls Valley, Wynnewood, Lindsay, and other communities. Full page-by-page review for band terminology was not completed, so the newspaper record should be treated as an open research field. Confidence: high.
17. Photographs and visual records
The 1970 Pauls Valley yearbook includes photographs of the band in formation, marching activity, drum majorette, Band Council, contest preparation, and named members. The source packet preserves the downloadable PDF and OCR for visual verification. No separately identified early Garvin County band photograph was verified in this pass. Confidence: high.
18. Family and musician connections
The Pauls Valley yearbook provides a substantial set of student names for family-history matching. The newspaper collections may connect those musicians to parents, siblings, directors, civic groups, and later adult participation. Names from OCR should be normalized against original page images and genealogical records. Confidence: medium.
19. Scope boundaries and negative searches
Included are wind, brass, percussion, marching, concert, school, parade, civic-performance, contest, and instrumental-ensemble records. Excluded are orchestras and string groups, vocal-only groups, country and western groups, rock groups, and unrelated popular-music acts. The absence of a separately named adult band in this pass is not evidence that none existed.
20. Recommended follow-up
Review the Pauls Valley Democrat, Pauls Valley Sentinel, Wynnewood newspapers, Lindsay News, and local Garvin County titles for band and concert terminology; inspect Pauls Valley yearbooks before and after 1970; obtain Wynnewood, Lindsay, Davis, Elmore City, Maysville, Stratford, and Pernell yearbooks; locate Arbuckle Band Day programs and ratings; inspect From Bluestem to Golden Trend page by page; and contact local historical societies and schools for band photographs, uniforms, programs, and director records.
21. Source and confidence summary
Garvin County has high-confidence direct evidence of a strong Pauls Valley High School band in 1969-1970 under Jim Winkle. The record includes daily practice, annual concerts, a named roster, drum-majorette and Band Council structures, Oklahoma City and Edmond parades, Arbuckle Band Day in Davis, Wewoka and Ada contests, and superior and excellent ratings. Earlier county continuity and band activity outside Pauls Valley remain incompletely documented.
