In this history

1. Scope and method

This first-pass report covers organized instrumental bands and related school, civic, marching, concert, brass, percussion, and military evidence in Custer County through December 31, 1999. It separates verified facts from leads and excludes unrelated popular music from the qualifying count.

2. County communities searched

The search centered on Clinton and Weatherford and included Thomas, Hydro, Custer City, Arapaho, Butler, and rural school communities. The strongest evidence is concentrated in Weatherford. Confidence: medium.

3. Newspaper and archival base

The Gateway provides the Custer County Republican from Weatherford, with 489 issues and 3,928 pages currently exposed from 1900-1909. It also provides a 1934 Weatherford News issue. These are important primary-source bases for earlier school, civic, parade, and concert searches. Confidence: high.

Sources: Custer County Republican archive, Weatherford News, May 17, 1934

4. Earliest located qualifying evidence

The earliest directly verified qualifying band evidence located in this pass is the Weatherford High School band documented for the 1968-1969 school year in the 1969 yearbook. The 1970 Clinton yearbook provides a second school-band record. I did not verify an earlier Custer County band in the accessible sources examined. Confidence: high for the earliest located record, low for any claim of historical absence.

5. Weatherford High School, 1968-1969

The 1969 Weatherford yearbook identifies the high school band as an important school tradition and names Terry Segress as director. It describes a 64-member band, new red and black uniforms purchased with PTA and contributor funds, performances at all home football games, marching-season morning practice, appearances at meetings and school activities, and the band's own concerts. Confidence: high.

6. Weatherford personnel and leadership

The yearbook names Terry Segress as director and lists many student members, including Tim Goss, Carol Murphy, Jane Hassinger, Jo Ellen Short, Debbie Petrowsky, Rosalie Hatfield, Steve Moses, Kay Brown, Ruth Ann Witcher, Debbie Lanier, Linda Vaughan, Janice Friesen, Marilyn Sanders, Jean Jones, and others. It identifies Jo Ellen Short, Kathy Smalley, Ann Larue Bottom, and Peggy Wilkinson in twirler and drum-major contexts. Confidence: high, subject to OCR verification.

7. Instrumental evidence

The Weatherford yearbook explicitly references a bass horn and describes high school instrumentalists. The complete instrument roster was not recovered in the first OCR pass, but the band is clearly an organized school instrumental ensemble. Confidence: high.

8. Clinton High School, 1970

The 1970 Clinton High yearbook contains band references, including a Band Queen entry and school-band context within the fine-arts and student-activity sections. The first OCR pass did not recover a complete roster, director name, instrumentation list, or contest chronology. Confidence: medium.

9. Directors and instructional personnel

Terry Segress is directly identified as Weatherford High band director in 1969. No reliable director name was verified for Clinton or the other searched communities. Confidence: high for Segress; high for the present gap elsewhere.

10. Performances and venues

Weatherford's band performed at home football games, school activities, meetings, and its own concerts. It practiced during marching season on the college baseball field. These records show use of athletic fields, school settings, civic meetings, and concert venues. Confidence: high.

11. Competitions and ratings

No specific contest result or rating was verified in the first Weatherford and Clinton yearbook pass. The newspaper archive remains the best source for contest notices and results. Confidence: high for the present gap.

12. Uniforms and material support

Weatherford's 1969 band received new red and black uniforms with white overlays, funded by the PTA and other contributors. This is direct evidence of community support for a sizable school band. Confidence: high.

13. Civic and community bands

No separately named pre-2000 civic or municipal band was verified. Weatherford's band performed at meetings and school activities, but that does not establish a separate community ensemble. Confidence: medium.

14. Other Custer County towns

No separate pre-2000 named band was verified here for Thomas, Hydro, Custer City, Arapaho, or Butler. This is an incomplete-search result, not evidence that those communities lacked bands. Confidence: medium.

15. Newspaper findings

The Custer County Republican and Weatherford News establish a substantial newspaper base for earlier research. The current pass did not complete page-by-page OCR review of the full holdings, so no earlier band chronology should be inferred from the absence of an immediate search result. Confidence: high.

16. Photographs and visual records

The 1969 Weatherford yearbook contains band group photographs, uniform photographs, twirler and drum-major material, and named captions. The packet preserves the complete text PDF and OCR for visual follow-up. Confidence: high.

17. Family and musician connections

The Weatherford yearbook provides a strong starting set of names for family-history matching. A complete roster extraction and name normalization should be performed from the page images before public display. Confidence: high.

18. Scope boundaries

School concert, marching, pep, brass, wind, and percussion evidence is included. Vocal music, orchestras, string groups, rock, country, blues, gospel, jazz, and commercial popular groups are not counted as qualifying bands without direct evidence of relevant instrumentation.

19. Negative searches and archive gaps

No pre-1969 qualifying band was verified; no Clinton director or full roster was recovered; no specific contest rating was located; and no separate band was verified for the other searched towns. These gaps likely reflect incomplete digitization and OCR limitations.

20. Recommended follow-up

Review the complete 1969 Weatherford and 1970 Clinton yearbooks page by page; obtain earlier and later yearbooks; search the Custer County Republican, Weatherford News, Clinton newspapers, and college publications for band notices; identify Weatherford's band predecessors and successors; and search Thomas, Hydro, Custer City, Arapaho, and Butler school records separately.

21. Source and confidence summary

Custer County has strong verified evidence of a substantial Weatherford High School band in 1968-1969, including Terry Segress, 64 members, uniforms, marching activity, football appearances, meetings, school programs, and concerts. Clinton has a confirmed but less fully extracted 1970 band record. Confidence is high for the Weatherford findings and medium for the Clinton summary. The main uncertainty is earlier county continuity and band activity outside Weatherford and Clinton.
