Sources & methods
Musicians’ experiences and historical evidence can illuminate one another. Each needs its own context.
What the collection contains
The site draws on ensemble records, individual musician research, Hall of Fame accounts, music education records, newspaper captures, and archive descriptions held in the Oklahoma Musicians library. Source pages provide links to the original repositories and publications.
Keep the source’s meaning
Names, dates, places, and qualifications are retained from the source records. An appearance, award, or photograph documents its particular context. It does not automatically establish a complete biography, a founding date, or an uninterrupted ensemble history.
People and relationships
Similar names remain separate source accounts. A relationship or continuous history is stated only where the record supports it. Names appearing in historical sources are not automatically identified as future interview participants.
Places on the map
The map uses county boundaries, county names in the collection, and documented communities linked through the Census Bureau’s published place-code reference. A city spanning counties can appear under more than one county when an exact county is not established by its source. A mapped item is connected to a place named by its source. It is not automatically assigned a birthplace, headquarters, or current residence. Records without a supported county remain searchable in the library.
Images and use
Original photographs and documents are connected with their sources. Images whose reuse terms require further resolution are reached through source links. See the teaching, research, and fair-use policy.
Explore and ask questions
The collection is a developing body of evidence. Questions and conflicting accounts belong with their records. Share a story, material, or correction to help develop those connections.
